Studying

Many newcomers are able to enjoy the education opportunities available in Canada.  At the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre we are able to provide information on how the schooling system in Canada works, from how to enroll a child in school to how to apply for college or university.

STUDY PERMITS

In Canada, if you are not a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident, you must have a Study Permit to attend a school, college or university.  There are some special situations where a study permit are not required.  The staff at the Centre can help you find information on:

  • How to apply for  a study permit
  • How to determine if you require a Study Permit for the course or program you plan to take

LEARNING ENGLISH

For most newcomers, learning English is an important part of settling in Saskatchewan.  BIRC can provide guidance and information on learning English!

EAL CLASSES

English  as an Additional Language (EAL) classes are available to those wishing to learn English, or improve on their current abilities.  We can provide information on:

  • Where and when classes are available and how to register for them
  • What a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) assessment is and how to get one

VOLUNTEERS

The Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre works to connect newcomers to their community through volunteers.  We work with many community-based volunteers who volunteer their time in a variety of ways including:

  • Helping newcomers practice English one-on-one
  • Acting as Community Mentors to newcomers, showing them around the area
  • Assisting with events hosted by the Centre
